Copy received for an honest review
Aleya Michele is a new Australian author, so I jumped at the chance to review her debut novel, Breaking My Heart.
You know what I liked? An Aussie author, writing about places in Australia and using Australian terms. He drove a ute, not a pick up, mum not mom.
Roxy has been screwed over by the men in her past, starting with her father. It has shaped who she is today. She doesn’t trust men – and I can’t blame her after the boyfriends she has had in the past. I loved that she was a bit messed up. Is it just me, or do you get sick of the “perfect girl” that is in so many books? I loved her flaws
Kade was a breath of fresh air – a 23 year old inexperienced guy. No troubled billionaire/messed up biker/fighter. He’s a tradie, a builder. No man whores here – yay!! But gees, the boy has some anger management issues!
You know from the start that their relationship is not going to be an easy one. And boy it sure isnt’! I wanted to shake some sense into Roxy at times, tell her to stop pushing Kade away!
Now while I really liked the storyline, there were a few things that made it a bit of a clunky read for me or irritated me:
- Kade and Roxy calling each other “baby”. I have no trouble with the term of endearment, but once they decided that was what they were going to call each other, they used it every sentence they said to each other! Sometimes less is more, and this would be one for me.
- Character names or their relationship to the main characters changed a couple of times. I scratched my head and had to go back and reread to make sure I had the right people
- The timing just felt off. The story line jumped around a bit. One minute the couple are at the beach, and without a break or taking a breath, the next sentence they are back home in bed. Huh, what? Things just seemed to run into each other or jump ahead.
But don’t get me wrong, I did like the story. It was a good story, but I feel that it had potential to be a really good story. But these things will come with time, as Ms Michele hones her craft and gets more experience.
So, do Roxy and Kade make it through all their issues? Will they have their happy ever after.
Nope, for that you are going to have to read for yourself.
Okay well there’s a glimpse of the girl that makes my heart skip a beat, her true emotions, her honesty.
Her walls are definitely up.
Do I want to have to break down those walls?
Will it be mission impossible?
Will I get hurt again? Fuck
I can’t resist this woman!
As irritating, confusing and frustrating as she is, I just can’t resist her!

Born and raised in Sydney, NSW I am in my thirties and happily married with 3 gorgeous boys.
My first love has always been reading, so the writing side is very natural to me. Favourite books include anything by Abbi Glines, but Fallen too Far is a favourite, Pulse & Collide by Gail McHugh and The Driven trilogy by K Bromberg.
Hobbies of mine are playing netball; shopping and I love listening to music. I add it into my writing frequently.
I am totally enjoying this rollercoaster of being an Indie author and hoping others enjoy my writing as much as I love writing it.
