It seems like forever since the first book in the Homeruns series , but it hasn't been.  It has just been me impatiently waiting that has made it seem so much longer.

We got a tasty morsel of Curve Ball at the end of Wild Pitch, and I have been chomping at the bit for Curve Ball.

So while I loved Wild Pitch, I LOVE Curve Ball. I couldn't see how this series could get better, but it did!

Jason Klein and Cam Morgan could not have been more different. Jason, baseball star manly man.  Cam is quieter, more effeminate, into fashion and cooking.

But boy do they complement each other!

From the minute they first met, you could feel the pull between them.  Their emotions jumped of the pages I couldn't help but laugh, cry, love with them.

At times I wanted to slap Cam across the back of his head for being so damn stubborn, but as the story progressed I had more of an understanding of why he acted like he did.

And Jason - OMG the feels!  His past still haunting him today, my heart ached as he struggled to move forward without feeling he was betraying his past.

What I loved about this story was that it was more that sex.  Hello, I loved the sexy times, but this was more about Jason and Cam forging their new relationship and not just relying on sexual chemistry.

I adored that we got more of the characters from the first book - which you do not need to have read before reading Curve Ball, but why wouldn't you want to.  Was great to see how Sean and Mason (book 1) are settling into their lives together.

Cam and Jason's story is a bit more gritty, a bit more angsty than Sean and Mason's - nothing over the top - and I really liked it!

The one person I was most intrigued by was Cam's roommate Drew. I am very much looking forward to reading his story in the next book.

Keep writing the m/m stories Ms Johnson - I really think it is your thing!

“If you have something to say to me, just say it.” I tapped my fingers on the steering wheel to keep from shaking Drew. He was one of the youngest guys on the team, and right now, his immaturity showed through brightly. It was about time someone knocked some sense into him, before he wound up earning a bad reputation, both on the field and off. “I won’t apologize, because I haven’t done a damn thing to offend you.”

“Really? I shouldn’t be pissed off that I had no clue you were gay?” Drew seethed, his brown eyes narrow slits as he glared at me. “And I should be totally cool with you loading up my friend in the middle of the night to take him back to your place, right?”

“Yeah, actually you should,” I quipped, twisting the wheel tighter. “Cam is a grown man, and if you truly care about him, you should be fucking ecstatic that he’s getting out there to meet people.”

Drew muttered something to himself as he went back to staring out the window. His shoulders slumped forward and he seemed to shrink in his seat. I knew that look. It wasn’t one worn by a concerned or pissed off friend, it was the look of a man who felt the love of his life slipping away from him.

“How long have you felt this way about him?” I asked. My chest tightened, knowing that I wouldn’t stand between them. Drew and I might not be close, but I liked to think of him as a friend, a brother on the team.

“Doesn’t matter.” The response was so quiet I could barely hear the words. As I pulled up to the stoplight, I placed my hand on Drew’s shoulder, unsurprised when he jerked away.

“It does,” I assured him. “And you have to know I wouldn’t have done anything with him if I’d known.”

“Don’t say that. I’ve known for a long time that he’d never feel for me what I do for him.” I suddenly missed the anger Drew showed earlier. “If the way he looked this morning is any indication, you’re exactly what he needs in his life. And if I put my own feelings aside, you’re more than that. You’re what he’s always wanted.”

That was not how I expected this conversation to go. It started exactly as I’d seen it in my mind, but I hadn’t expected Drew to step aside. Maybe I was wrong in thinking that he was immature and selfish.

“Drew, if you say the word, I’ll back off. I’m not willing to destroy two friendships just for a few nights of fun.”

“The only way I’d ask you to do that is if that’s all this is for you.” I pulled up in front of the grocery store, but neither of us moved to open our doors. “Cam is one of the best guys I know. He’s got a big heart, but sometimes, he’s a little too open with it. If you’re only in this for a couple of hot nights, then yeah you should walk away from him.”

I felt backed into a corner. Sure, I’d thought about what it’d be like to explore something more with Cam, but I wasn’t in a place to do that. It had nothing to do with being on the road most of the year and everything to do with my own inability to be open with those around me. I’d grown accustomed to never letting anyone get too close, and Cam had already seen more than people I’d known for years. There was no way I’d be able to hold back if last night and tonight turned into something more.

“I’ll keep that in mind.” It was the most I could promise him.

Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s life. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.

When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.

Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?

Now, Sloan is a tattooed mom with a mohawk and two kids. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself with a good book and frget she has somewhere to be.

A maid at the exclusive Romance Island Resort, Audra knows how to handle rock stars, billionaires and celebrities. She keeps their secrets, cleans up their mess and makes sure their holiday is a memorable one. There's just one rule: no relationships with guests.

And Audra never breaks the rules.

Jay Felix is rock royalty and he knows it. When one of his bandmates threatens to break up the band, he goes into hiding at the Romance Island Resort. Looking for a distraction, he sets his sights on the unattainable Audra. But what's a rock star to do when the girl he wants is the one woman he can't have?

Welcome to paradise, where the romance is as hot as the weather and the tides aren't the only thing surging under the surface.

ARC received for an honest review

I have not read anything by Demelza Carlton, but I am a sucker for a rock star book so of course I was going to read it.

Set on a remote Western Australian island, Audra works housekeeping at the Romance Island Resort, struggles to make ends meet, has family issues - just your regular, run of the mill normal woman.

Jason "Jay" Felix is kind of in hiding, deciding what do do now that his band has split.

I really like the premise of the book, the upstairs/downstairs kind of relationship between Audra and Jay.

I know we were supposed to love to hate to love Jay, but man, did he get on my nerves at times!  He was such the "I'm the rich rock star, you will do what I want" type.  He was a douchenozzle 95% of the time.  It was the 5% of the time when he was the little boy lost that redeemed him (mostly) to me.  He just lacked a bit of character development, he was still the same horny teenager obsessed with sex at the end of the book as he was at the beginning.

I adored Audra, loved how she didn't fall straight onto Jay's d*&k and into his bed.  I felt for her as family issues, career issues and psycho work mates conspire to make her life harder than it need be.

Maid For The Rock Star is a quick, easy read, however when I got to the end, it had me thinking "hang on, are we missing a chapter or two here?" Things were moving along and then suddenly.... nothing.  I am hoping we get more of what happens further in the series.

I will be reading more as they are written.

excerpt

A soft chime sounded, echoing in the villa. "Housekeeping at the door," a recorded but mellifluous English voice announced. "Maid service required?"

"Hell yes!" Audra heard Plum-Bum's excited shout.

His sister hushed him. The front door flew open and Audra found herself face to face with a young woman about her own age. Audra lowered her gaze to the woman's expensive shoes. "We don't need anything. We just arrived today and haven't made enough mess to need a clean-up yet."

But I did, Audra thought but didn't say. The bath tub was still full of frog-tainted towels. "Towels," she said, pointing.

"Ask her!" Plum-Bum insisted, his bare feet appearing on the tiles behind the woman. "You'd fuck me, right?"

Wow. He might have decent equipment, but that's all that defined this dickhead. Probably a porn star for sure. "No, thank you," Audra said faintly.

"What'd she say?" Plum-Bum demanded.

The woman shook her head and guided Audra to the bathroom, then blocked the doorway to keep her brother out. "She doesn't understand English. Most hotel maids are foreign migrants, waiting for their qualifications to come through as they improve their English so they can get higher-paying jobs. Besides, she could lose her job for sleeping with a guest. Don't you remember what the hotel manager said about fraternisation policies during our tour? Leave her alone, Jason."

Audra snorted. In Perth, maybe, hotel staff were recent migrants, but not here in Broome. Even the casual staff were Aussie. But if the woman's words kept her oversexed brother's hands off her, all the better. She set the stack of fresh towels on the edge of the spa and stuffed the froggy ones into the laundry bag.

Glass clinked on metal. An empty beer bottle going into the bin, most likely. The crunch and crackle of plastic followed it. Definitely the bin. She'd empty that on the way through and then she could escape the Pearls for the day.

Fixing her eyes firmly on the tiled floor, Audra marched to the kitchen to the approaching beat of helicopter rotors. Third flight today.

"Right, there's my ride returning. Don't get into too much trouble, don't make too much trouble for the staff, and enjoy your holiday. If you're not fit and ready for the band's farewell tour, you know it'll be your balls on the chopping block."

Band? Did she say he was in a band? Audra raised her gaze to scrutinise Plum-Bum's face. Even with the sexy stubble along his usually clean-shaven jaw, she recognised the face from the poster that had adorned her bedroom wall for the better part of the last five years. The one Sam kissed every morning. One she'd fantasised about since high school. Maybe she'd even kissed that poster once or twice herself. She glanced away before he could catch her staring. Oh shit. She'd already seen his –

"Promise me that if you get lonely, you'll call me. Don't do anything stupid." The sister sniffed. "I do love and care about you, you know."

"HA!" he shouted. "I knew it. Told you that you wanted me. It's not incest if I'm your stepbrother. Everyone wants me."

Audra snorted. Arrogant prick. Even she could tell the girl didn't.

"You're delusional, Jason. I love you because you're my brother, blood or no blood. I wouldn't sleep with you if you were the last man on Earth." She pulled out her phone and tapped it meaningfully. "Promise me you'll call me."

He nodded sulkily.

Her eyes met Audra's. "Don't take any shit from him. There's a place in town that neuters tomcats for half-price. You can put it on his hotel bill." She winked.

Audra stifled a snort of laughter. Mess with this man's glorious equipment? The world would weep. Especially if castration robbed him of his signature, underwear-igniting singing voice. Even she'd shed a tear for the loss.

She waited for the sister to leave before she pulled out the rubbish bin to change the bag inside.

Bare feet appeared beside the bin. "You understood every word, I bet," he said. "And I know you recognised me. If you know who I am, we both already know the answer to my question. So answer me. Would you fuck me?"

Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish.

She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below. Sensationalist spin? No - Demelza tends to take a camera with her so she can capture and share the moment later; shipwrecks, sharks and all. Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world. The Ocean's Gift series was her first foray into fiction, followed by the Nightmares trilogy. She swears the Mel Goes to Hell series ambushed her on a crowded train and wouldn't leave her alone.

I didn't think I could love one of the Ashes and Ember's guys more than I could Vandal.... but then I met Lukas.

Ivy's life is in tatters, but she is pulling up her big girl pants and is trying to move on.

Walking in to get a new tattoo, Ivy was not expecting her life to change so suddenly, and so dramatically.

We caught tantalising glimpses of Lukas and Ivy during Vandal's book, but they were just a tasty sample of all the goodness in this installment of the series.  And there were some events from Vandal that I had forgotten ,that caught me off guard again!

Lukas - swoon - I swear, reading this book had me wanting to jump in my car and drive around to tattoo parlours until I found my own Lukas.  Or if I couldn't find a Lukas, at least get another tattoo!

I swear, that guys gives all us older ladies a bit of hope!

Lukas runs concurrent with Storm and Vandal, so it is good that we get a little bit of each of the characters along the way.

Ivy, I could understand her hesitance at starting something with someone, let alone someone so much younger.  But I wanted to shake some sense into her, tell her to take that leap - or would I take her place!

I adored Lukas' persistence, never giving up on Ivy.  Life and love was never meant to be easy though, and there are struggles he and Ivy need to overcome.

Can they make a go of it when everyone and everything seems to be against them getting their HEA?

There were some secondary characters that I am still undecided about. Ivy's best friend?  Not sure if I like her or loathe her - though am leaning towards the loathe.

Ms Cole has a way of dragging you right along with her characters, from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. And I for one loved being on the ride with them.

Can't wait for Talon's story and more of the Ashes and Embers men

I have a passion for the bad boys, those covered in tattoos, sexy smirks, ripped jeans, fast cars, motorcycles and of course, the sweet girls that try to tame them and win their hearts. My debut series, Ashes & Embers, follows the lives of rock band members as they find, and sometimes lose, the loves of their lives.
My first novel in the Ashes & Embers series, Storm, was published in September of 2014 and book 2, Vandal, was published in February 2015 with several more of this series planned throughout 2015.
Born and raised a Jersey girl, I now reside in beautiful New Hampshire with my husband and our multitude of furry pets and spend most of my time writing, reading, and vacuuming.
