✪ Shadow Sands (Kate Marshall #2) ✪ Robert Bryndza ✪

 Release date: 3rd November 2020

The internationally bestselling author of Nine Elms and The Girl in the Ice is back with a nail-biting new Kate Marshall case, a woman with a dark secret and a powerful sense of justice.

When Kate Marshall finds the bloated body of a young man floating in the Shadow Sands reservoir, the authorities label it a tragic accident.

But the details don't add up: why was the victim there, in the middle of the night? If he was such a strong swimmer, how did he drown?

Kate is certain there is more to this case than meets the eye. As she and her research assistant Tristan Harper dig deeper, they discover a bloody trail that points towards an active serial killer hiding in plain sight. People have been silently disappearing for years, and when another woman is taken, Kate and Tristan have a matter of days to save her from meeting the same fate.

ARC received from publisher via Netgalley for an honest review

I am new to the writing of Robert Bryndza, Nine Elms being the only other book by this author that I have read so far.

And now I am kicking myself for what I have been missing.

This is the second book in the Kate Marshall series, and whilst it could be read as a stand alone (we are given back story), you won't want to miss Nine Elms.

Kate Marshall is a strong protaganist. She is protective, she is complicated, and so is her life.

When the ex-police officer and her son stumble across a body, the stage is set for another enthralling chase.  She is tenacious, not letting it go when her spidey senses feel that the investigators get it wrong.

Corruption and money are all in play in this twisted tale.  Just when you think you know what is going on and who is the bad guys, we are thrown a curve ball and left scratching our heads again.  I had an idea of the who but no idea of the why or what for.

What I really liked the most is the relationship between Kate and Tristan - a Watson and Holmes of sorts.  I like the direction they are going as this story comes to its conclusion, and look forward to where Bryndza takes them in future stories.

Now I am impatiently awaiting more... I guess I should go check out more of his series whilst I am waiting.

Being a highly skilled operative for a company like Jameson Force Security is exhilarating and important workuntil it comes time to date. I like to keep my profession under wraps for a number of reasons. Some of what we do is top secret, most of what we do is dangerous, and more than one woman has tried to latch onto me because she was more enamored with what I do than who Cage Murdock really is. And since I’m more of a ‘here for the night’ than a ‘here for forever’ kind of guy, what’s the harm in a little white lie about my job?

My harmless deceit has never failed me. Until now. Because I met the most amazing woman and did the unthinkable. I married her. And now my beautiful, unsuspecting, probably-going-to-leave-my-sorry-behind-when-she-finds-out-the-truth wife doesn’t know that I’m not a used car salesman like I told her when we met.

As it typically does with lies, the truth is about to come out in a big way when Jaime unwittingly gets herself mixed up with some unsavory characters and I, along with the team at Jameson, have to intervene. Now I need to save my girl and hope I can save my marriage too. Let’s just say I have some serious explaining to do.

Cage and Jaime.
We already heard a bit about them in the last book. This takes place at around the same time.
They met one night in a bar and it was insta attraction and ... kinda insta wedding a little bit later.
But unfortunately - or rather because he's used to doing it with one-night stands - Cage tells her he's a used-car salesman. Which is pretty far from the truth. He's obviously an ex SEAL who is now working in private security.
Let the fun times begin

♥♥♥♥
Another great book in this series!
We finally hear the whole story about Cage's insta-wedding! LOL!
Cage and Jaime are so perfect for each other. If only he hadn't lied to her that first night!
I really loved reading this. Funny, sexy and exciting!

Great romantic suspense! Can't wait for the next two guys - we've already been teased! ☺

This could be a really great TV Show!!!!

Here we go again with my AS rant:
I had some problems with the writing...as with every Sawyer book.
It's Sawyer's and my THING ☺ It's only me who has those problems with her writing. So please don't be worried or just scroll down and don't read the following...
I have a HUGE AS problem! ☺ You know the AS's I'm talking about? The AS that could/should be exchanged for a SINCE or a BECAUSE or just a comma/dot/pause/whatever.☺ It's a British and or a legal thing (if it's a thing at all!) and it doesn't have anything to do in a modern American book. I never hear normal people in normal conversations use it like that. On TV news maybe. I really don't want to insult Sawyer. I love her books, but  ... please stop doing it. But pfff who am I to tell her what to do, so just forget I said anything! It doesn't stop her books from being great!

CODE NAME: ROOK was a sexy & funny & exciting 6th book in this romantic suspense series! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Cage - this one is mine!

It's time for another round at Jameson Force Security.

Unfortunately, for me, and unlike the guys who work at JFS, this one didn't hit the mark.

I think for me it was because we knew a bit about Cage and Jaime and the things he had told her already, it felt like the first half of this story dragged.  I did have to look at my Kindle a couple of times to make sure I wasn't reading the wrong book, as it was all so familiar.  I like a bit of overlap - to remind my bookzheimer's brain - however this time it just made me want to skip ahead in the book to new stuff - sorry Sawyer!

The second half of the book did work better for me though.

I liked Cage and Jaime together, and could feel the heat coming off the pages.  But I did get frustrated with the lies and stuff.  Come on dude, you knew this was going to be trouble!

As you can see from Bianca's review above, these things didn't bother her, so this is probably just a me thing.

As much as I adore Sawyer Bennett's stories, this one and I weren't the best fit - and I hate writing that.

I can't wait to see what she brings us next though.

USA Today Best-Selling Author, Sawyer Bennett is a snarky southern woman and reformed trial lawyer who decided to finally start putting on paper all of the stories that were floating in her head. She is married to a mobster (well, a market researcher) and they have two big, furry dogs who hog the bed. Sawyer would like to report she doesn't have many weaknesses but can be bribed with a nominal amount of milk chocolate.
